Two weeks after Derek Sanderson had been traded by the Rangers and Emile Francis to the Blues The Turk scored a goal for his new team against the Rangers in St. Louis on Nov. 11 1975. As he skated back to his bench Sanderson flipped the puck into the Blueshirts’ bench in the direction of The Cat — who was both the coach and general manager — in an act of ultimate derision and disrespect. My ONLY Resolution for the New Year Posted 12/31/2013 7:12 pm I was thinking if there was something that I should focus more on in the upcoming year. I wanted that to be ONE thing and not a laundry list of `` feel good '' resolutions. One will make it easy to focus on and also easy to hold myself accountable. Dear Indian Media Please Stop Calling the Kettle Black I woke up the other day to a photo from a friend who lives in north India. It was a headline from The Times of India and it read in thick bold font `` One in five women raped in US '' it was an eye catching statement on the front of their `` Global '' section sitting right above the fold. Now my friend is a very proud Indian and rightfully so he comes from a country that in 2013 alone did everything from put a rocket into space to double their solar output. Yet these socially progressive feats are still repeatedly marred on the internation

The Path Toward Its Own Destruction a Mexican engraver is resurrected in morbid skeletal figures who collapse into the shadowed chaos of the past. Rejected by his subjects the wide-eyed windblown prophet departs on a raft of serpents and furiously points to a distant ominous future when as foretold he would return in the company of other white gods to found a new civilization. It comes as no surprise to discover the Spanish Conquistador Hernán Cortés waiting on the far side of the library 's reserve book desk. Rep. Chris Gibson has tested Irving’s theory. Gibson whose closely cropped graying hair announces his Army pedigree believes he should be in the Guinness Book of Records for having moved so swiftly — in 10 months — from membership in America’s most admired to its least admired institution. On March 1 2010 he ended a 24-year military career and on Nov. 2 was elected to Congress. This fall he will participate in perhaps the year’s most interesting congressional contest. Mocktails Come of Age What 's missing from these cocktails Only the hangover. It 's also a study in what works in the modern NFL. When the two teams arrive at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey Denver will be bringing the best offense in the league and Seattle the best defense. It has been 29 years since the two Super Bowl teams scored 10 points more than their opponents on average per game. Pete Carroll stands 60 minutes from the Lombardi Trophy because he never stopped believing in Pete Carroll. Nick Saban lasted two years with the Dolphins before he gave up on his NFL dream. Steve Spurrier lasted two years and returned to the cocoon of college football. Lou Holtz lasted 13 games in his 1976 disaster with the Jets. It has taken Carroll 20 years — two decades after a fake spike changed everything for him — to show the NFL world he is no fake coach he belongs with the elite of his profession. Iran Occupies Center Stage at Davos But Finds Itself Under the Microscope There is a view that calls for assisting the moderate camp by helping Rohani rescue the Iranian economy from the sanctions. This view purports that this would weaken the IRGC and its backers especially after dismantling the Iranian nuclear program. But in reality a rapid improvement in the Iranian economy to respond to Iranian moderation would empower the party represented by the IRGC enabling it to fulfill its objectives in Syria Lebanon and Iraq. It is best to weaken the conservative right rather than rescuing it and h

The desire to write my first novel was a desire for privacy. I was writing short stories and had said out loud more than once that I would never write a novel maybe because I knew publishers preferred novels and I was telling anyone who happened to care that I wouldn’t write to please publishers. An editor at The New Yorker read a story of mine in the slush pile wrote an encouraging rejection then published others —

China Creates Jobs Even as Growth Slows China’s economic policy makers have trained their sights on the twin goals of growth and employment insisting that growth needs to be near current levels to create enough new jobs. The government wants to create 10 million urban jobs and keep the official urban employment rate under 4.6 Doing so they believe is key to ensuring social stability. But many economists say that the official reasoning is flawed and that China could withstand lower growth levels than the 2014 target of about 7.5 and still get all the jobs it needs to meet targets. “The relation

May 31 2014 8:12pm Obama marked the 60th anniversary of the Supreme Court 's landmark Brown v. Board of Education school desegregation decision. Hearing Obama administration officials commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision desegregating public schools you’d think there wasn’t much progress to celebrate. They made it sound as if the nation’s schools are as racist today as they were under Jim Crow segregation. Federal data tell a starkly different story. WASHINGTON -- The nation 's capital is not a happy or well place Arthur Brooks has concluded. He should know. A pioneer in `` happiness studies '' Brooks examines the how and why of human wellness in all its dimensions physical mental moral and spiritual. As president of the American Enterprise Institute a think tank devoted to extolling the virtues of capitalism Brooks argues that free markets are the most efficient means yet devised to give people the chance to be fulfilled. While pursuing that intellectual sales mission he has also become a student of the city in which he lives and he sees

Obama’s smaller vision of U.S. interests flunks its first test in Iraq The summary moment of Barack Obama’s foreign policy came in August 2013 during a consequential stroll. Walking on the South Lawn of the White House with his chief of staff Obama effectively canceled airstrikes against the Syrian regime which had used chemical weapons on civilians in defiance of an American “ red line .” With a deference usually unexpressed on domestic matters Obama decided to request congressional permission for the use of force — raising a hurdle he seemed reluctant to clear. The tea party would rather burn than submit to Washington A friend of mine worked for a small-town newspaper years ago and had to write the weather report. The county fair was approaching but the prediction was for rain. So the editors fearing the wrath of local merchants ordered my friend to change “rainy” to “sunny.” That was the newspaper’s policy. It has since been adopted by much of the Republican Party. It is a stunning thing when you think about it GOP conservatives adopting a position of studied ignorance or to put it more humorously a version of what Chico Marx said in “ Duck Soup ” “

A ruling last week in a Utah case is having an impact far beyond state lines and adding to the tension around the freedom to marry. The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last week that Utah 's marriage-equality ban violates the U.S. Constitution. This decision upholds a lower court 's ruling from last December. The Tenth Circuit stayed its ruling pending appeal by the state of Utah. But Boulder County Clerk Hillary Hall immediately began issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples citing her obligation to obey the U.S. Constitution.
